Nepal

Introduction Nepal

Nepal is a proudly independent nation located in the very heart of the High Himalaya Mountains. Nestled between India and China, it is the home of the world’s tallest peak, Mt Everest (8,848 m). In addition, eight of the 14 highest peaks in the world are located in this tiny, highly diverse, South Asian country.

Nepal is famous for more than just the world’s highest peak. Lord Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) was born in western Nepal and it was from here that Buddhism spread throughout the world. The famed Gurkha’s soldiers of the British and Indian Armies are made up of soldiers from Nepal. In the southern region, you will find the Royal Bengal Tiger as well as the Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros while up in the high mountains are the beautiful snow leopard and the clouded leopard along with the red panda.

You will find all kinds of mammals, birds, and reptiles in Nepal. Each level of elevation features different types of animals, butterflies, and birds. Bird-watchers find Nepal especially delightful as it is situated on the major north-south routes for birds migrating from as far north as Siberia.
The country of Nepal consists of lands that range from sub-tropical jungles in the south to extreme alpine conditions, all within an area of less than 150 km from north to south.

Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal is composed of three ancient kingdoms that have inhabited the Kathmandu Valley for over 2000 years. These ancient cities of Kantipur, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur (Patan) contain six of the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Valley while the 7th site features the oldest Hindu Temple in the Kathmandu Valley at Changu Narayan. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites feature important Hindu and Buddhist temples that stretch back in importance thousands of years.  The ancient streets of the various cities of the Kathmandu Valley are narrow and await your exploration as you explore the many hidden temples, restaurants, museums, and other fascinating places. Come and walk the places where the hippies of the 1960s stayed, and where many famous rock musicians lived and wrote many of the great hits of the rock era.

History is simply one of the things you can enjoy while in Nepal. This is a land known for trekking in the high mountains where you meet a myriad of cultures while beholding some of the finest scenery in the world. You can go paragliding from several locations in the country as well as experience the world’s highest bungee jump and the world’s longest zip-line where speeds can reach 140 km/h. In the very southern part of Nepal, discover jungle safaris as you look for the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger and the rare Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros. It is in Nepal that you have one of the best opportunities to see a Royal Bengal Tiger in the wild, along with the rhinos and wild elephant herds.
